It's an honor to speak with you today. Why don't you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

I believe challenges in life happen “for you” not “to you.” Like many women, my story is something that should have never unfolded the way it did. I married my highschool sweetheart very young and had three absolutely beautiful babies.Then my happy world was shattered by infidelity and alcoholism. I had to survive raising children essentially by myself, and run the household often working 3rd shift because my husband was simply not able to function. On top of that I had to endure the denial and pressure from both families when I finally needed to end the marriage. I still cannot believe I survived this period.

My next life challenge was my fault. I jumped into a rebound marriage for safety that ended up being incredibly abusive to me and my children. I still cry when I think about what I feel I put them through. Ending this marriage was also a traumatic ending. Now I needed to raise three teenagers, work as a nurse and try to pick myself back up. It was a long road, but I did it.

Then on my 45th birthday, my boyfriend at the time and future husband got me a workout coach as a gift. I remember after my first leg workout I could not walk or sit on the toilet because I was in so much pain. But my body started to change rapidly, losing 15 lbs and building attractive muscle. I was getting curvy and strong and people noticed. Then almost a year into my program my coach suggested I consider a figure competition. Me... flexing my muscles in a bikini on stage at almost 45 years old? After some strong encouragement from my boyfriend and saying to myself “I am 45 years old, what the hell”, I did it and I loved it. I did not place well, but I loved the experience and wanted more. This was the spark for my fitness career. I kept competing and improving and got my pro-card in figure and fitbody. People started asking me for fitness advice. That led to me getting my training certifications and focused study of fitness, nutrition and long term health. That led to moonlighting as a trainer while I was a nurse manager of 100+ staff. Crazy I know. Then I closed my eyes and made the big jump. I retired from nursing to open my own gym and have time to design “My” unique approach to long term health. So here I am, still evolving and building my life story. Looking back, my challenges forced me to learn, adapt and get stronger. It made me what I am today. For that I am grateful.

I'm sure your success has not come easily. What other challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

After a 30+ year career in critical care nursing I can say that caring for people is in my DNA. So transitioning to helping people get healthier and fit was an easy transition and frankly more rewarding than helping people in the hospital bed. However, managing a gym and running a business was completely new and was incredibly intimidating. I was completely lost and terrified to be honest. I had never done anything like that and did not have those skills or mindset. My husband did help me tremendously, but also really pushed me to learn business and grow as a professional so I did not have to rely on anyone else. I am still on that path everyday. Then Covid hitting our community was obviously a very scary thing. But my husband and I had a realistic perspective on it. We did not go into fear mode and made a decision that we were going to make this an opportunity to get stronger, help more people and provide more value at a time they need it most. I had already developed my online client platform and video broadcast platform for online workouts so transition was pretty easy. Our clients jumped right in with us and we had a blast due to our unique client community. We are so indebted to them for their progressive thinking and proud of how they also stayed strong through those early times of Covid.

Let's talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

So I take a unique approach when helping my clients improve their fitness and really their overall long term health. When someone reaches out to me they want something to change or they have a big goal. Almost 100% of the time they are looking at exercise as the primary method of achieving it. I know from my experience that you have to look at more than that if you want to be truly successful. I call them the four Pillars of Health: Exercise, Nutrition, Lifestyle Habits and Hormonal Balance. All of these are connected and if even one pillar is not right then you have an uphill battle. If they are aligned then the path is faster and easier. I am able to help my clients with all four pillars.

What's your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Everyone has a different idea of success and it can change over time. What is more important is “Why”. I always start my new client journey with helping them find their “Why”. This helps both of us understand the motivation behind their goals and helps me guide them in alignment with their “Why”. It is very powerful to understand what drives you. So my advice would be to start with your goals and ask “why”, then ask the next level of “why” until you get to the simple and fundamental “Why” in your life. Maybe it’s to be there for your kids, grandkids or other loved one, maybe it’s to get your confidence back or maybe it’s simply your time to shine. Your “why” could even be a little selfish and that is perfectly fine. But knowing your “Why” is a very powerful first step.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

I love this question. Success is not a destination, it is a process or set of habits. A success process touches everything we do from keeping a commitment to getting out of bed on time to finishing your first 5K race to saving a little money each pay period for a rainy day. Once you can show yourself you can keep your commitments to yourself, you get more confident and continue to develop more habits to achieve what you want. That process is what I call success. Apply commitment and accountability to small habits and rituals in your life that are aligned with your “Why” and where you want to go, you will get here and likely farther. Then you set your sight on your next goal, one after another. This is success and a truth that works every time.

What's next for you?

Oh boy, that is a loaded question. First of all, I am always learning and willing to redefine myself and my practice. I am constantly researching the latest advancements in longevity and training techniques to optimize the health, fitness and happiness of my clients and ...as well as my own. On a bigger scale my next steps are already in progress and that is to take what I do to a broader national audience with virtual coaching and training. I specifically want to take my Beautiful After 50 community of amazing ladies I call my Angels to the next level. I want to continue to grow that community, add even more value and show the Angels how to support and be accountable to each other. I only have so much time and energy, so if I can show the Angels to take each other's hand and pass it on, I can accomplish so much more than I can by myself. Another step we have taken is to add the 4th Pillar and I am now able to offer hormone and peptide therapy to my clients. This is an exciting area that both men and women can get tremendous benefit from. This used to be difficult to access, but one of the silver linings of the Covid shutdown was that has opened doors to telemedicine and made getting quality managed care so much easier. I can now bring all 4 Pillars to so many more people.
